Redact content from a PDF
Mark sensitive regions, remove their underlying page content on export and save a separate PDF for checking before the document is shared.
Remove content instead of covering it
A rectangle drawn over a PDF changes the visible page but can leave the underlying text or image data intact. A redaction must remove the covered content from the exported file, not only hide it from view.
The black region in the result shows where content was removed. Selecting, copying or searching across that region should not recover the original wording, because the source content is no longer present there.
Rewrite each redacted page on export
On export, each page containing a redaction is rebuilt with new drawing instructions. Its font programs and embedded objects are cleared, and the marked region becomes opaque final pixels without the covered source content.
Comments, form values and file attachments associated with that page are removed. Accessibility structures that may carry alternate text are stripped, the writer keeps only reachable objects and orphaned source streams are discarded.
Use blur for an obscured region
Blur applies an irreversible mosaic when the shape of a field should remain visible without preserving its readable detail. On export, the source pixels beneath the blurred region are removed from the file.
Choose a solid redaction or blur according to the appearance required in the finished page. Both operations are permanent in the exported copy and cannot restore the covered source content.
Check the exported redaction
Open the exported PDF in another reader and search for the removed name, number or phrase. Try to select and copy across the marked region, inspect comments and attachments, and confirm that the expected pages remain present.
Review the surrounding context as well as the marked area. A remaining sentence, sorted table or repeated identifier may disclose the removed value indirectly, which can require a wider redaction.
Process the unredacted file locally
The selected PDF and unredacted page content are processed in this browser and are not sent to a document-processing server. The source file on disk remains unchanged throughout the operation.
Keep the source until the result has passed the search, selection and visual checks. Store or delete the unredacted original according to the retention rules that apply to the document.
